Storm surges to increase with climate change?
Climate scientists at the Met Office Hadley Centre say storm surges may become higher and more frequent this century. Studies of climate change at the Met Office Hadley Centre suggest that in the future the height of coastal floods is likely to increase, potentially causing more damage.
"It is not possible to attribute any single weather event to climate change. However, floods that occur once in a hundred years on the east coast today may happen once every ten years by the end of the century," commented Jason Lowe, Climate Scientist at the Met Office.
The Met Office is working on a major new study of coastal flooding around the UK, which will be the most comprehensive of its type gloabally. The study will use information from a range of climate models and include the effects of changes in sea level and changes in storm levels.
