Npower launches £20 million Greener Schools programme with Sophie Ellis-Bextor
Pupils from Thornhill primary school in Islington got the chance to meet Sophie Ellis-Bextor this morning, when she went along to launch npower's Greener Schools programme.
She joined Andy Duff, npower's CEO, to announce the £20 million, five year initiative, designed to make schools more sustainable.
Thornhill is one of the 2,500 schools the programme aims to reach, which includes rolling out Climate Cop Academies, which interactively trains children in simple ways to save energy.
Ellis-Bextor said: 'As a mother concerned about the environment and education I'm really excited to be involved in the npower Greener Schools programme. The programme is unique in that it has been designed to motivate children to make their own choices in how they want to save the planet. Every day we can all do a few small things that together will make a big difference.'
Under the programme schools will be offered 'green makeovers'. This includes free energy audits, helping to implement tailor made energy efficiency measures to reduce their carbon footprint and educating children on how to be greener.
It's hoped that what is happening and learnt in the schools will raise awareness around the importance of energy saving in the wider community.
